The Milton Public Library is launching a new initiative aimed at preserving the stories and cultural heritage of local seniors through a multilingual oral history project.
The program, titled Preserving Voices, Empowering Communities, is supported through the 2025 New Horizons for Seniors Program and will document seniors’ life stories in their native languages. Organizers say the initiative is designed to promote cross-generational learning, strengthen community connections and empower seniors to take on leadership roles as mentors and cultural ambassadors.
The project will include the creation of a digital archive featuring recorded oral histories with English captions, along with interview training workshops and digital literacy sessions for participants. Additional workshops will focus on financial fraud prevention, offering culturally relevant education to help seniors recognize and avoid scams.
As part of the initiative, a series of in-person storytelling workshops will be held at the Beaty Branch on March 23rd, welcoming seniors from diverse cultural backgrounds. Sessions include storytelling for Panjabi-, Mandarin-, Hindi-, Urdu- and Spanish-speaking seniors, as well as a workshop for members of the Black community, each incorporating creative activities such as art, fitness or conversation while participants share their experiences.
The initiative aims to capture and preserve stories for future generations while building stronger community connections through shared experiences.
