More than 1,200 students will take part in the upcoming Halton Skills Competition, showcasing hands-on learning and skilled trades talent from across the Halton District School Board (HDSB).
The board will host the 34th annual Halton Skills Competition, with elementary events taking place March 25th and March 26th at the New Street Education Centre and the secondary competition scheduled for March 31st at Nelson High School.
Elementary students will compete in 15 challenges designed to connect classroom learning with practical experiences, including character animation, construction, green energy, LEGO mechanics and robotics, TV and video production, technology problem-solving and VEX IQ robotics. New this year is a Horticulture and Landscape category that encourages students to focus on biodiversity and local ecosystem health in their landscape designs.
Secondary students will participate in a range of skilled trades and technology events such as 2D character animation, architectural technology and design, auto collision repair and painting, auto service technology and baking, among others.
Top competitors will advance to the Skills Ontario Competition, scheduled for May 4th and May 5th at the Ontario Congress Centre in Etobicoke, where they will compete against students from across the province. For secondary competitors, the provincial event can lead to the Skills Canada National Competition, which will be held May 28th and May 29th at the Enercare Centre in Toronto.
