The 2026 Winter Olympics have come and gone, with Halton being well represented on the big stage.
Milton’s Lia Pereira made her Olympic debut and finished in 8th place in the individual pairs figure skating event with her partner, Trennt Michaud.
Georgetown’s Sarah Fillier played a pivotal role for a Canadian women’s hockey team that won silver. She was joined by Oakville’s Brianne Jenner and Kristin O’Neill, as well as Burlington’s Emma Maltais and Renata Fast.
Oakville was also represented by freestyle skier Evan McEachran; snowboarder Kaylie Buck; and, figure skater Madeline Schizas.
We caught up with Member of Parliament (MP) for Burlington North—Milton West, Adam van Koeverden to discuss the whirlwind of athletics put on display this month. The Olympic Gold Medalist also serves as the Secretary of State for Sport in Prime Minister Mark Carney’s Cabinet.
MP van Koeverden says he’s proud of the athletes who represented Canada in Italy.
He adds that he was able to catch up with a lot of the Halton athletes while in Italy this month, including chatting with Milton’s Pereira about her skating and Oakville’s Schizas about her now-famous homework story.
MP van Koeverden says the 2026 Paralympic Games will be starting on Friday, March 6th, meaning he’ll be making the trek back to Italy soon to cheer on our Canadian athletes once again. Full coverage of the games will be available on CBC Gem.
The Arctic Winter Games are also set to begin in Whitehorse, Yukon, where all three Canadian territories will compete against Alberta North, Nunavik-Quebec, as well as non-Canadian teams such as Alaska, Kalaallit Nunaat (Greenland), and Sapmi (Scandinavia). Those will begin on Sunday, March 8th. You can learn more about the winter games here.
It continues to be a busy sports year for Canada, as van Koeverden is also preparing for the 2026 Men’s World Cup. Canada will host several games this year, which Canada’s Secretary of State for Sport says will be a fun experience for all involved.
The 2026 FIFA World Cup will officially start on Thursday, June 11th, and will run until Sunday, July 19th. Canada will be competing in the tournament once again after competing in 2022 for the first time since 1986. The team looks to get their first ever win in the international tournament. They will have the chance to do so in front of thousands of Canadians in attendance as all three of their group stage match-ups will take place in either Toronto or Vancouver.
