A 40-year-old Guelph man is facing multiple charges following an investigation into a series of stolen vehicles late last year, including one taken from Halton.
The investigation began in December after a Toyota Camry was stolen from outside a pizza shop on Stone Road West in Guelph while the owner, a delivery driver, was inside preparing his next order.
On December 15th, a Lexus reported stolen the day before from Halton was found abandoned at a gas station near Gordon Street and Kortright Road. Security footage showed a man and woman exiting the vehicle and walking in opposite directions. The man was later captured on video stealing another Toyota Camry that had been left running outside a nearby coffee shop before picking up the woman.
The Guelph Police launched an investigation and identified suspects. In late December, two individuals were seen leaving a Cambridge address and entering a Nissan Pathfinder stolen from London. The following day, one of them was observed driving a Toyota Rav4 reported stolen from Kitchener.
A 26-year-old Cambridge man and a 20-year-old Cambridge woman were arrested in December and charged with motor vehicle theft and possession of stolen property.
As the investigation continued, officers executed a search warrant Wednesday, February 18th at a home near Woolwich Street and Speedvale Avenue in Guelph. A 40-year-old Guelph man was arrested and charged with:
- motor vehicle theft
- driving while prohibited
- multiple counts of possession of stolen property over and under $5,000
He was held for a bail hearing Thursday.
Police are reminding residents to take precautions against auto theft, including parking in garages or well-lit areas, locking doors and windows, using anti-theft devices and signal-blocking pouches for electronic keys, and reporting suspicious activity around unattended vehicles.
