A Barrie man has been arrested in connection with an assault reported last week after being recognized by an officer on patrol in the city’s downtown.
Barrie Police say the incident occurred on Tuesday, January 27th, when a male suspect approached a victim asking for a cigarette before allegedly assaulting the individual and leaving the area prior to officers arriving. The suspect was later identified through CCTV footage captured in the area.
On Saturday, January 31st, an officer on patrol spotted a man on Dunlop Street who matched the description and image of the suspect. The individual was arrested and taken to police headquarters, where officers determined he was in possession of fentanyl.
The 21-year-old Barrie resident has been charged with:
- Assault
- Fail to comply with probation (x2)
He is further charged with:
- Possession of a controlled substance – Schedule 1 – Fentanyl
- Failing to comply with probation (x2)
Police say the arrest highlights the effectiveness of Barrie’s CCTV program, which has been in place since 2012 and includes traffic and public safety cameras. Footage is retained for up to 20 days unless required for investigative purposes.
