The Ontario government has taken a major step forward in the redevelopment of Stevenson Memorial Hospital, awarding the Phase One construction contract to Canadian company Pomerleau Inc.
This milestone will help expand access to high-quality, convenient care for families in New Tecumseth and surrounding communities. The project is part of Ontario’s broader plan to invest nearly $60 billion in more than 50 major hospital projects over the next decade.
The $174 million investment will fund a new three-storey building, more than doubling the hospital’s current 74,000-square-foot facility to approximately 147,100 square feet. Once complete, the hospital will increase inpatient bed capacity by 20%, add nine new beds, triple the size of the emergency department, expand diagnostic and surgical services, and feature a brand-new birthing suite. The redevelopment is expected to be finished by late 2028.
“By investing in the redevelopment of Stevenson Memorial Hospital, we are making it faster and easier for more people and their families to access world-class hospital care in their community,” says Sylvia Jones, Deputy Premier and Minister of Health.
Local leaders celebrated the milestone. Todd McCarthy, Acting Minister of Infrastructure, said, “Once complete, this modern facility will transform health care for families and residents in New Tecumseth and surrounding communities.” MPP Brian Saunderson added, “I know the community will be excited to see shovels in the ground and the start of construction on a new expanded and enhanced state-of-the-art hospital.”
Stevenson Memorial Hospital currently serves 38 inpatient beds and provides outpatient services to residents of Adjala-Tosorontio, Canadian Forces Base Borden, Essa, Innisfil, and New Tecumseth. The selection of Pomerleau followed a fair and competitive procurement process that began in August 2024. This redevelopment is part of Ontario’s plan to deliver approximately 3,000 new hospital beds and modernize the province’s health-care infrastructure, with funding also supporting critical upgrades at hundreds of hospitals and health-care facilities across Ontario.
Carmine Stumpo, Supervisor at Stevenson Memorial Hospital, noted, “Many years of planning have brought us to this moment, and we look forward to continuing on our journey to bring an expanded, modern hospital to New Tecumseth and surrounding communities.”
This redevelopment promises to significantly enhance patient care, accessibility, and capacity for the growing communities in Simcoe County.
