Milton Fire & Rescue Services is reminding residents that new carbon monoxide alarm requirements will come into effect across Ontario in the new year following updates to the Ontario Fire Code.
Carbon monoxide (CO) is a colourless, odourless gas that can be deadly, and the updated rules are intended to improve early detection and reduce the risk of CO poisoning in homes. Under the changes, CO alarm requirements will apply to detached and semi-detached homes, townhouses and cottages that contain fuel-burning appliances, fireplaces, attached garages, or receive heated air from fuel-burning systems located outside the home, such as outdoor wood furnaces, boilers or outbuilding furnaces.
Starting on January 1st, the Ontario Fire Code will require carbon monoxide alarms to be installed near every sleeping area and on every storey of a home, including levels without bedrooms. Additional responsibilities will apply to landlords, building owners and operators of multi-unit residential buildings and care occupancy facilities, such as apartment buildings and group homes.
Milton Fire & Rescue Services notes that properly installed and regularly tested CO alarms provide early warning and can help save lives, particularly during colder months when heating systems are in frequent use.
