The Town of Milton says it is fully prepared to respond to winter weather and keep local roads and sidewalks safe as snow season approaches.
Crews will maintain more than 2,400 kilometres of Regional and Town roads and over 250 kilometres of sidewalks and walkways, with a significant weather event declared when snowfall of 20 centimetres or more is expected. That means response times may take longer.
Milton uses a priority-based system for snow clearing. Priority 1 routes, including major roads and transit corridors, are treated and plowed first to achieve bare pavement. These are followed by Priority 2 rural collector roads and industrial areas, and then Priority 3 residential streets, which are cleared once higher-traffic routes are safe.
The Town notes that windrows (snow piles left at the end of driveways) are only cleared for residents enrolled in the Windrow Removal Program. All other homeowners are responsible for clearing their own driveways and sidewalks, and are encouraged to help neighbours who may have mobility challenges.
Residents are also reminded to avoid street parking during snow-clearing operations. Several designated parking lots will remain available for up to 48 hours when parking exceptions are suspended due to storms or significant weather events.
Milton says residents can support safe winter operations by moving vehicles off streets, clearing attached sidewalks within 24 hours, keeping fire hydrants and storm drains accessible, giving plows room to work, and allowing extra travel time during storms.
For updates during winter events, residents can visit the Town’s winter maintenance page or follow its social media channels:
Non-emergency snow-clearing concerns can be reported 24 hours after snowfall ends through the Town’s online form or by calling 905-878-7282 ext. 2500.
