More than 266 members of the legal community gathered in Hamilton for the 24th annual Sopinka United Way Legal Luncheon, raising over $461,000 to support local families facing increasing challenges.
The long-running event, founded by John F. Evans, has grown into a major regional fundraiser, generating more than $3.8 million to date for United Way programs across Halton and Hamilton. This year’s luncheon at the Sheraton Hamilton Hotel featured The Right Honourable Beverley McLachlin, Canada’s first female and longest-serving Chief Justice, who spoke about leadership, justice, and the legal profession’s responsibility to community wellbeing.
The event also highlighted growing needs in the region as families struggle with rising living costs, housing pressures, and access to essential supports, with United Way emphasizing the role of local leadership in creating stability.
“The legal community continues to show incredible compassion and commitment,” says Brad Park, President and CEO of United Way Halton & Hamilton. “They see how difficult things have become for too many of our neighbours, and they’re choosing to do something about it. Their leadership gives hope and stability to families who desperately need our help.”
Allen Wynperle was honoured with the John F. Evans Award of Community Distinction for leadership and volunteerism through United Way.
