The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has closed its investigation into the serious injury of a 35-year-old man that occurred last month in Halton Hills.
On the afternoon of Friday, September 5th, police responded to a domestic disturbance at a residence in Halton Hills. Officers found a man injured and bleeding from his head, and arrested his stepson at the scene. While being transported in a police cruiser, the stepson repeatedly struck his head against the interior window, prompting officers to take him to hospital where he was diagnosed with a fracture to his right hand.
The SIU’s preliminary review determined the man’s hand injury occurred before police interaction. As a result, Deputy Director Stacey O’Brien concluded that officers did nothing that could attract criminal liability, and the investigation was discontinued.
The SIU is an independent provincial agency that investigates incidents involving police where there may have been death, serious injury, sexual assault, or firearm discharge. More information about its mandate and processes can be found here.
