Milton Public Library's Beaty branch (2021)
The Milton Public Library (MPL) is hosting a special Indigenous Veterans Day ceremony next month.
Each year on November 8th, Canadians observe Indigenous Veterans Day, honouring the many First Nations, Métis, and Inuit people who served in the Canadian Armed Forces. Despite systemic barriers and discrimination, thousands volunteered in times of war and peace, making lasting sacrifices for Canada.
Ahead of the ceremony, MPL is offering a series of youth craft workshops led by Wanda Wilson, a local Indigenous artist.
At these sessions, youth ages 13 – 17 will learn to create beaded poppy flowers and assemble them into a beaded poppy wreath. The poppy remains a powerful symbol of remembrance, and the activity will give participants a meaningful way to reflect on its significance while paying tribute to Indigenous veterans.
All materials will be provided, and participants can also earn volunteer hours for their involvement. The next workshop takes place on Tuesday, October 7th, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. in the Beaty Branch Program Room.
The ceremony on Friday, November 7th at the Beaty Branch.
