The Halton Learning Foundation (HLF) has announced that, thanks to the generosity of the community, more than 250 Halton District School Board (HDSB) students have already received backpacks, school supplies, clothing, and food to start the school year with confidence.
Carrie the Backpack, HLF’s cheerful campaign mascot, shared her excitement but reminded the community that the work isn’t done.
“I’ve still got my eye on 300 kids who need help. We’re so close, and I know with a little more support from our community, we can make sure every student feels ready for school!”
The need is greater than ever. During the 2024–25 school year, HLF responded to a record 3,600 requests for help – nearly 20% more than the year before. With one in eight Halton students now living at or below the poverty line, HLF provides gift cards for essentials like backpacks, new shoes, or groceries, ensuring families can choose what their children truly need while preserving dignity.
“No child should walk into school feeling the weight of hunger or the shame of not having the basics,” emphasizes HLF CEO Marc Clare. “With the community’s help, we’ve already supported more than 250 students — but we can’t stop there.”
Residents can make a difference by donating here. A one-time gift of $250 helps one student for the year, while monthly donations starting at just $20.84 are also encouraged. Through a special partnership with belairdirect, monthly gifts will be matched dollar-for-dollar up to $15,000, doubling the impact for students in need.
