The Ontario government has awarded the first two contracts to begin construction of Highway 413.
The highway is expected to connect York, Peel, and Halton regions, with projections of reducing travel times by up to 30 minutes per trip.
Premier Doug Ford made the announcement in Caledon, where resurfacing work on Highway 10 is underway in preparation for a new bridge that will cross the future highway. Additional upgrades will soon begin at the Highway 401/407 interchange, which will serve as the western terminus of Highway 413. Once complete, the route will extend from the Highway 401/407 interchange near Mississauga, Milton and Halton Hills to Highway 400 in Vaughan, with links to Highways 410 and 427.
The province estimates that construction will support over 6,000 jobs annually and contribute more than $1 billion to Ontario’s GDP each year during the building phase. Ontario has also committed nearly $30 billion over the next decade for highway, road, and bridge projects, which include Highway 413, the Bradford Bypass, and the twinning of the Garden City Skyway.
Government officials say the project is part of a broader effort to reduce gridlock, which a report from the Canadian Centre for Economic Analysis estimates could cost $108 billion annually by 2044 if not addressed.
