A Milton man has been charged following the death of seven-year-old Dante Caranci, who was hit by a vehicle while getting off a school bus in London, Ontario last December.
London police say 47-year-old Atir Gayyur Mir of Milton was behind the wheel of a 2023 Honda Pilot when he failed to stop for a school bus that had its lights flashing and stop sign extended. Caranci was exiting the bus on Longwoods Road at the Murray Road intersection when he was struck. He died in hospital the following day.
Mir, who was working as a courier at the time, is now charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing death. According to police, he made no attempt to slow down or stop for the school bus.
The school bus driver, 82-year-old Jose Lema of London, has also been charged with criminal negligence causing death. Investigators allege Lema failed to follow safety procedures and should have seen Mir’s vehicle approaching.
Police spent over six months reconstructing the scene and analyzing evidence before announcing the charges. The investigation determined both drivers had a responsibility to ensure Caranci’s safe crossing – and both failed in that duty.
Mir appeared in court last week and is scheduled to return in August. Lema’s next court date is in late July.
