The Halton District School Board (HDSB) has announced that Brent Coakwell will be stepping into the role of Superintendent of Education.
Coakwell currently serves as the System Principal of Safe Schools. He was selected following a competitive hiring process in May and will succeed Jennie Petko, who was recently appointed as the Board’s Associate Director of Education.
“Brent’s ability to build trusting and respectful relationships with students, staff and families has strengthened our school communities,” says Curtis Ennis, Director of Education for the Halton District School Board. “Throughout his time at the HDSB, he has consistently demonstrated a deep commitment to student success and well-being. His insight and steady support to the senior team and school administrators have been integral in moving forward our commitment to creating safe and supportive spaces for all students, as outlined in our Multi-Year Strategic Plan (MYSP). Brent’s depth of experience and strong relationships within our board and beyond will continue to inform his thoughtful leadership, and play a pivotal role in helping us advance the commitments of our MYSP.”
Coakwell brings a wealth of leadership experience to his new role, having served in both teaching and administrative capacities across multiple school boards. He joined the HDSB in 2017 as Principal of T.A. Blakelock High School in Oakville, following several years with the Peel District School Board. In his current role, Coakwell has helped lead initiatives to support student well-being and safety, with a focus on building inclusive and welcoming school environments.
