The Town of Halton Hills is joining communities across Canada in marking Emergency Preparedness Week under the theme “Be Prepared.”
From Sunday, May 4th to Saturday, May 10th, residents are encouraged to recognize potential risks and prepare in advance for emergencies, whether weather-related or otherwise. Local organizations, businesses, and all levels of government are working together to spread this vital message.
“Every season brings its own unique circumstances where an emergency can occur,” says Bruce Morrison, Deputy Chief with the Halton Hills Fire Department. “We live in an area where weather-related events offer a high probability for hazards – whether it’s keeping cool or managing the impacts of ice storms. The key is to plan and have discussions with all family members, so everyone knows what to do in any situation.”
Create emergency plans that cover communication strategies, evacuation procedures, fire safety, pet care, utility shut-offs, and secure storage of important documents. Preparedness materials will be available for download here and in-person at local municipal arenas and the Gellert Community Centre throughout the week.
“Safeguard your family, your employees, colleagues and pets by having conversations and making plans,” adds Mayor Ann Lawlor. “Please consider your neighbours too.”
The Town also encourages residents to reach out to vulnerable individuals who may need extra assistance, such as seniors, pet owners, and people with disabilities or special needs.
