Winter highway driving (from the FM 101 Milton files)
The winter weather has arrived!
Many are dealing with the harsher weather conditions on the road, and hopefully driving with caution this time of year.
Speaking with the Chief Operating Officer for Young Drivers of Canada, Maria Bagdonas, she says motorists need to remember the simple things every year to keep themselves safe on the road.
She stresses that it is important to follow the rules of the road, especially when the roads get slipperier and the skies get darker. Don’t follow too closely behind people, keep speeds low, and keep your eyes on the road. Right-of-way is a shared responsibility, and pedestrians also need to follow the rules to stay safe.
If your winter tires aren’t on now, you’ll want to hurry to get them on. The general rule issued by experts is that drivers should always look to change their tires over to winter tires when the temperature has dropped below seven degrees Celsius for seven straight days. This is called the ‘seven-for-seven’ rule.
