What else did we talk about this morning?
ICYMI – The history behind Milton’s Alder Gate and Watercress Way
This was delayed to today due to yesterday being the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. Each week, Milton Historical Society President John Challinor discusses the origins of local street names. We have two streets named after nature this week! There will be two more street names next week.
Daily WTF – Fat Bear Week delayed after a large bear kills a rival bear
Fat Bear Week was briefly delayed this week. If you don’t know what that is: every year, Katmai National Park & Preserve in Alaska holds an online contest where people can judge and rate their bears. The goal is to name the fattest bear using trail cam footage. Sadly, it was delayed because one of the bears killed another bear. The fight was actually captured on their very popular live webcam, causing the conservation area to issue a statement about the harsh realities of nature. Despite the brief delay, Fat Bear Week still kicked off this week. You can vote online and decide who truly is the fattest bear in the woods.
Daily Did You Know – Glass Tiger and Strumbellas headline 2024 season at FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton
The FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton has been ROCKING the last few years, and it appears this next season is going to be no different. They released their 2024 schedule this week, with lots of lineup details. When I combed through the listings, the biggest ones that stood out to me were Glass Tiger and Strumbellas coming to town, mainly because we played multiple songs from both bands. You can also catch tribute shows for ABBA and Tony Bennett, which should be a lot of fun. The new season starts this month!
Ontario increases minimum wage by 65 cents
Some good news was shared by the provincial government this week! Minimum wage has gone up by 65 cents. Workers making minimum wage will now earn $17.20 an hour, up from $16.55. In a statement, the province said that nearly one million workers in Ontario are living on minimum wage, so it’s nice to see them get a few extra dollars each week. Now if only they could do something about the cost of living. It’s nice for people to make a few extra bucks, but it’s not nice when everything else just goes up in price as a response. That doesn’t seem fair.
How much Messi tickets cost for Toronto match this weekend
The biggest name in soccer is going to be in Toronto this weekend. Inter Miami will be in the city to play Toronto FC, and Lionel Messi is expected to be with the team. It’s unclear if he’ll be suiting up for the team, as the soccer star has been hit and miss on the road for the team. It’s also not really an important match for his team, so they might just let him rest before the season comes to an end. Well, it seems this isn’t stopping people from getting their hopes up. Ticketmaster reportedly has tickets going for hundreds of dollars for the game. Would you want to see Messi in Toronto? Are you okay with paying hundreds for the game? Let me know! The game is set for this Saturday at 4pm.
GOOD NEWS – Did Taylor Swift create a new era for food bank donations?
As the Eras Tour comes to a close this fall with Taylor Swift’s Canadian leg of the tour, many are looking at what she’s done for the communities she’s performed in. This has been the biggest concert tour of all time, with Taylor Swift swiftly becoming a billionaire off the back of it. Every city she performs in receives a significant boost in tourism, and the same goes for all of their food banks. In more than a year of touring, Taylor Swift has made sure to donate money to each and every city’s food bank. This has led to more than $1 million in donations, helping hundreds of thousands of people be able to eat… And that is some good news!
Adopting older pets is a trend I can get behind
A man named Andrew McCarthy has gone viral on social media after sharing that his cat had passed away. He went a whole year without having a cat in his life, and in his own words, he felt a void. So, Andrew decided to get up and go to a nearby animal shelter, and he wanted to take home the cat with the saddest eyes. This senior cat has come home to him, and it’s his goal to give this little fur baby the best life, no matter how much time he may or may not have. Would you ever adopt a senior pet? Have you ever done it? Send pics my way!
James Blunt promises to change his name to “whatever the public wants” if his debut album hits Number One
A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. Singer James Blunt has decided that his name isn’t what’s important to him right now. He appeared on a radio show recently to promote the relaunch of his debut album. This record came out 20 years ago, and it included his massive hit song You’re Beautiful. It’s Blunt’s goal for this album to top the charts, and so he has made a proposal to the public: should this album reach number one again, he will permanently change his name. Blunt doesn’t even care what the name gets changed to, as he’s given the naming duties to you and I. So, Mr. Blunt – get ready to forever be known as Blunty McBluntyFace. It’s kinda what happens when you give the public naming duties.
The Simpsons fans left confused as series unexpectedly airs its ‘final’ episode
Did The Simpsons come to a close on Sunday night? Believe it or not, The Simpsons is still on TV airing new episodes, with this past Sunday being the first episode of Season 36. However, the episode didn’t start off how fans expected… It wasn’t a premiere episode, it was a finale. As in, the series finale. Yes, after 36 seasons, The Simpsons announced their surprise end on Sunday. Or at least, that’s what it appeared to be. It ended up being a hoax by the writers, who wrote a parody finale, likely because there are people who feel the show hasn’t been good in more than 20 years. The writers asked AI to write the perfect finale for The Simpsons, which featured animated recreations of final shots of shows including The Sopranos, Breaking Bad, Game of Thrones and Succession. The whole thing was a joke. So, did The Simpsons air their series finale on Sunday? Yes. Was it their series finale? No… Confusing? You betcha!
