What else did we talk about this morning?
ICYMI – Students returning to school across Halton this week
It’s the first day of school today across Halton. All the kids had a PA Day yesterday, as teachers got a chance to get things ready before the chaos started. Make sure you’re careful on the roads this morning. Drive safe, keep an eye out for those yellow buses. Remember that there’s now a cellphone ban this year, which might affect your direct line with your kids. If you’re a parent with a kid that attends Irma Coulson Public School, expect to see Town Councillor for Ward 3, Adil Khalqi at the school this morning. He’ll be handing out coffee and Timbits to parents, and answering any questions they might have about the community. Enjoy the week – the fun starts now. Very soon, it’ll be Halloween, and then Christmas, and then summer all over again. Appreciate the now!
Astronaut reports strange sounds coming from troubled Starliner
The sci-fi movie ‘Alien’ had a famous tagline, “In space, no one can hear you scream.” And that’s not technically true in the sense that you might be connected, in someway, through satellite signals and whatnot. The Starliner Spacecraft is reportedly making some weird noises while stationed at the International Space Station, and astronauts are a little creeped out by the matter. Boeing says it’s just speaker feedback coming from the docked spaceship and shouldn’t cause any issues moving forward. But, to me, that answer doesn’t rule out space ghosts, and I think we should all be a little more worried about space ghosts. Nah, it’s probably fine. We all make weird noises as we get older. My shoulder started cracking the second I turned 30 last week… Maybe I have space ghosts in my shoulder? That’d be pretty rough.
Daily Did You Know – Milton Fall Fair returning for another year
Get ready for loads of rides, food, live music, and events as the Milton Fall Fair is returning for another year. It starts on Friday, September 27th at 3pm at the Milton Fairgrounds. The Fair will run all weekend. We’re expected to be there all three days, broadcasting live on location. If you want to stop by, say hi, and get yourself three corn dogs, a large poutine, and a Beavertail, I won’t stop you. In fact, I’ll encourage it. Live your best life! Go see the Milton Fall Fair.
RECAP WITH CAP: Weekly interview with Milton Menace captain Graeme MacAuley – Episode 3
The Milton Menace are putting the finishing touches on their preseason ahead of their season opener this weekend. Captain Graeme MacAuley made time for us as he cleaned up the locker room and video room for the team. He talks about pre-game prep, the passing of Johnny Gaudreau, and who he projects to be the three stars of Friday night’s game.
The history behind Milton’s Attenborough Terrace and Ollerenshaw Point
Each week, we speak with Milton Historical Society President John Challinor II to gather information and details about the namesakes of our roads. This week, we have two streets named after a former councillor and a pair of local fundraising aficionados. There’ll be two more street names next week!
GOOD NEWS – Meet (or adopt!) Moodini, the steer that spent 2 months on the lam in Boston
A sneaky steer is up for adoption after he spent two months on the run in the Boston area. Known as ‘Moodini’, the male bovine managed to escape his previous home and ran off into the woods surrounding Boston. Not only did he evade the dangerous wildlife, but Moodini also managed to successfully hide from search parties for two months. He was eventually located recently, and is staying at a farm facility owned by the local SPCA. The humane society is now looking for someone who would like to adopt Moodini and give him a safe home to live out his days. If you’re in the market for a steer, and you don’t mind doing the eight or so hour drive to Boston, he’s yours for the taking… And that is some good news!
South Korean city offering $64,000 for people to get married and have children
You’d think that falling in love, getting married, and having children is a priceless part of life, but if you asked a South Korean city about it, you’d actually make money! It turns out, South Korea has one of the lowest birth rates in the world, and communities are looking for ways to counteract that. The city of Busan is offering just over $50,000 CAD to anyone looking to settle down and start a family there. It starts with a singles event, with successful couples receiving about $500 each. If that progresses to a marriage proposal, there’s an extra $1000 each. On the wedding day, you’ll get about $20,000. They’ll even offer $30,000 on a down payment for a house or pay a good chunk of your rent for five years. There might not be a price on love, but there’s a price on living… And that’s close enough!
PWHL Toronto relocates to Coca-Cola Coliseum for 2024-2025
It was quite the first year for the Professional Women’s Hockey League. They sold out a bunch of games, had great TV ratings, and managed to provide a professional wage for female hockey players. And that was all with a few months of preparation. Heading into year two, there are some big changes expected to come. The big one locally is that Toronto’s team will be moving out of the Mattamy Athletic Centre at TMU and into Coca-Cola Coliseum near Exhibition Place. This could potentially triple their attendance for home games. The move will take effect when the next season starts this winter. Next up on the checklist: Get team names and new jerseys for each franchise. And do it ASAP!
