On my drive home after the wedding this weekend, I saw lots of orange and red hiding in the trees.
It’s a friendly reminder that August is just about done, and the official start of fall is less than a month away.
How do you feel about the leaves changing colours? Does it bring you joy as you wait for fall – or is it anxiety inducing knowing winter is around the corner?
Let me know!

What else did we talk about this morning?
ICYMI – Tim Hortons adds dog toys to the menu
I don’t know about you, but my dogs love Timbits from Tim Hortons. When they were younger, we’d walk down Mountainview in Georgetown and get them some old fashioned plain Timbits to snack on. Then they got older, those walks turned into drives, and now those lazy fellas just get delivery service. But it’s a nice treat for them! Well, there are a lot of people who treat their pups with Timbits, and Timmies has announced a new menu item to honour that. Starting on Monday, Tim Hortons customers can buy DOG TOYS. Yes, Timmies Dog Toys. It’s for National Dog Day. You can either buy a squeaky Timbits box or a squeaky red coffee cup. Later this year, they’ll also have cat toys! Those will be available online and in participating Tim Hortons locations.
Daily WTF – How a young man convicted with 8 grades managed to infiltrate the police in Ploiesti during investigations, raids and hearings of witnesses
If you are of a certain age, there’s a good chance that you spent at least one night of your life staying up watching episodes of America’s Most Wanted. Diving headfirst into current cold cases, it can be terrifying and exhilarating knowing these dangerous criminals are there. They might even be outside your window right now! Or, they might even be on the police force, hiding in plain sight. A man in Romania had just an eighth grade education and multiple unpaid traffic violations, but managed to hide among the local police force. He impersonated a police officer for years, and even sat in on investigations, raids, and witness hearings. Eventually, someone wised up, and I’d imagine fired him from the job he didn’t have like he was Kramer in that one episode of Seinfeld. He’s since been arrested and charged.
Daily Did You Know – The history behind Milton’s Mulroney Heights and Snoek Point
Each week, we speak with Milton Historical Society President John Challinor about the origins of local street names. We covered a street named after a former Prime Minister, as well as a street named after a longtime local resident this week. There will be two more next week!
GO train service on Milton line and at Hamilton GO station resuming Monday
If you’re looking to get to work this morning, good news: the trains are back up and running. There was a lockout late last week, as contract negotiations between the railway and the union stalled. This shut down the Milton and Hamilton line. After one day, the feds decided to step in and demand an arbitrator finalize the agreement. With that decision, the lines have reopened, with today being the day. Expect delays this week as things get back to normal.
Here’s where you should (and should not) swim in Halton (August 23rd)
The Halton Region says most of the beaches in the area have REMAINED safe for swimming. If you’re looking to cool down from this hot summer, then you can try heading to a local beach. The Region routinely samples the water to make sure they are safe for visitors. Nine beaches were checked, with EIGHT being determined to be safe for swimming. That includes Milton’s Kelso Beach and their new waterpark. You are cautioned that things can change day-to-day and even hour-to-hour thanks to rainfall and other factors. The rule they have is if you can’t see your feet while standing in waist high water as an adult, don’t go swimming!
GOOD NEWS – Woman, 102, becomes Britain’s oldest skydiver
You can most definitely teach an old dog new tricks! Manette Baillie of the UK is 102-years-old. She celebrated her birthday recently by jumping out of a plane! She’s no stranger to daring challenges, having previously spent her 100th birthday driving 130mph in a Ferrari. She’s been doing these activities to raise money for charity, having now raised funds for her local legion, and now the Motor Neurone Disease Association… And that’s some good news!
Project Safe Start to begin next week around Halton
You’ll see more police cars around Milton today. Next week is the start of school, and in preparation of that, the Halton Police have launched ‘Project Safe Start’. The two week long campaign has police officers camp out in school zones, looking for dangerous, impaired, or distracted drivers. Remember to drive slow, keep your eyes on the road, and don’t drive while under the influence. The campaign ends on September 6th.
Double Duty: For Danny Jansen, playing for both teams in same game is chance at baseball history
Earlier this year, longtime Toronto Blue Jays catcher Danny Jansen played in a game against the Boston Red Sox. There was nothing spectacular about the game, as it happened to be suspended part way through due to rain. Thing is, Jansen now plays for Boston, and that game is being resumed today. Jansen is expected to play, which will make him the first player in baseball history to ever play for both teams in one recorded game. A piece of the game is expected to go into the baseball Hall of Fame, which is pretty cool! The game resumes at 2:05pm.
Gallagher brothers tease Oasis reunion
Someone needs to send a weather person to Hell, because it appears as though it’s freezing over as I write this. The internet was thrown into flux yesterday when both Gallagher brothers teased the return of Oasis. Liam and Noel last performed on stage together in 2009 before they got into a fist fight backstage. They’ve been arch enemies ever since, but it seems that Wonderwall they built up around each other is crumbling down, exploding in a fantastic Champagne Supernova, as the two have teased a major announcement for tomorrow. It’s expected for 8am, which could be as early as 2am for his here in the GTA. I’ll keep you posted for tomorrow!
