What else did we talk about this morning?
ICYMI – Summer Reading Club returning to Milton Public Library
The Milton Public Library is bringing back its Summer Reading Club! It’s an annual program that promote literacy throughout the summer months. This year’s theme ‘To the Stars’ invites young readers to embark on an interstellar journey through reading. A launch event will be held on Saturday at the Main Library location.
Daily WTF – Queues gather at Kew to sniff ‘corpse flower’ stink
There’s an ongoing joke that people in the GTA love lining up for things. You’ll find lineups everywhere! I think the UK might have us beat though, as people are lining to up for the opportunity at a miserable experience. You see, a public garden in London is home to a plant affectionately known as the ‘corpse flower’. Unlike most flowers, the scent this particularly large plant gives off is revolting; vomit inducing, even. It smells like a rotting dead body. The corpse flower went into bloom this week, and people are waiting to get a whiff. Apparently yesterday was peak stink season… No, thank you!
Daily Did You Know – Milton Transit will be free this summer for local youth with library cards
Milton youths will be able to ride the bus for free this summer! Milton Transit and the Milton Public Library are once again teaming up for the Read and Ride program. Students 16 and under can ride for free as long as they present their validated library card. The program starts on Saturday, June 22nd with a launch event.
Justin Timberlake refused breathalyzer test during drunk driving arrest
The biggest story in entertainment this week is the arrest of Justin Timberlake. The popstar was caught driving under the influence in New York state, and more news has come out from the arrest. According to reports, Timberlake refused the breathalyzer, which is always a no-go. It’s also reported that he even pulled the “do you know who I am?” card, and it’s funny because the young cop had no idea, and did not care. Timberlake will appear in court next week. At this time, he’s still scheduled to perform two shows in Chicago this week.
Flat white is top coffee order in Ontario, according to study
What’s your coffee order? According to a study, the people of Ontario love themselves a flat white. It’s defined as being “less frothy than a traditional cappuccino and has less milk than an American-style latte.” I actually worked with a guy in Yellowknife who drank a flat white every morning. He’d get it from a local coffee shop before work. In second place for Ontarians was espressos, and third was fancy cappuccinos. Now, the study came to these conclusions by analyzing monthly searches, and I’ll argue that’s why it’s the fancier coffee drinks at the top of the list. Norm from Milton isn’t searching how to make a large double-double from Timmies, you know? Anyway, how do you take your coffee? Let me know!
GOOD NEWS – Citizens group decides fate of heiress’ fortune
If you received millions of dollars through inheritance, what would you do with it? For Marlene Engelhorn of Austria, she’s looking to get creative. The woman recently received $27 million from her grandmother. Recognizing that it was a lot of money to receive, she decided to donate the vast majority of it, but the question she had was, “where?” That’s where a group of 50 strangers come into play. These 50 people decided which charities will split $25 million. The money will go to 77 organizations, including social and climate groups… And that is some good news!
Snow in June? Parts of Alberta get blast of wintry weather
You might be feeling the heat in Milton this week, but it could be worse! People in Alberta got quite the surprise: snow! Yes, select communities woke up to some white stuff in June thanks to a unique weather pattern that rolled through the area. It didn’t last long, as temperatures shot back up within a day, but still! Happy first day of summer, and Merry Christmas in June…
McDonald’s offers to change 1 Edmonton location’s name on 1 condition
The Edmonton Oilers are in the fight of their lives currently, as they head back home tomorrow to play in game six of the Stanley Cup Final against the Florida Panthers. It’s do-or-die for the Oil, as they’re down 3-2 in the seven-game series. There’s a lot on the line tomorrow night, including the fate of one Edmonton McDonald’s location. You see, the star of the Oilers is Connor McDavid. He might just be the greatest player to ever play the game – he’s that good. McDonald’s Canada has pledged that, should the Oilers win the Stanley Cup and bring the cup north of the border for the first time since 1993, they will change the name of one of their Edmonton locations to McDavid’s. No word on if this name change would be permanent, but we’ll know by Monday at the latest if it’s happening. Let’s go, Connor. You now have MULTIPLE franchises that you’re playing for here.
‘Slow’ running group off to a fast start
Taking up running is a daunting task for anyone. It’s strenuous, exhausting, and when you first start off, you’re not very good at it. That’s why the residents of Dartmouth, Nova Scotia started the Slow AF Running Group. It’s a running group for people who are worried about being really slow at running, and that fear has restricted them from joining an existing running group. It began last month with three people, and by it’s sixth week, it’s up to 40! If you’re looking to start running, and you’re anxious about your speed, start your own group! I’m sure plenty of people in Milton would join a local Slow AF Running Group. You get in shape and you make friends… that’s a win-win.
