Ontario ATV enthusiasts are being encouraged to educate themselves about what they can do to make every ride a safe and enjoyable one.
This is ATV Safety Awareness Week (May 31 to June 9) and the OPP want riders to be safe.
Police are reporting a 125 per cent increase in ATV fatalities this year, with more than half of those killed in collisions, found without a helmet.
So far this year, 9 people have died in OPP-investigated ATV incidents, compared to 3 drivers and one passenger at this time last year.
Police also say one-third of this year’s fatalities involved alcohol or drugs..
The Ontario Federation of All Terrain Vehicle Clubs urges all ATV riders, regardless of experience or skill level, to wear a properly fitted off-road helmet.
Always ride sober and maintain control of their vehicle.
The club recommends everyone, especially youth enroll in an Ontario’s Youth ATV Rider Training Program.
