ICYMI – ‘World Scavenger Hunt Day’ events at Milton Public Library this weekend
This Friday is ‘World Scavenger Hunt Day’ and the Milton Public Library is looking to keep families busy! They’re holding scavenger hunts at all three MPL locations. The whole family is invited. It’ll also take place on Saturday, so you have two days to take advantage of the fun.
Daily WTF – Man Fined for Attempting to ‘Body Slam’ Orca Whale in New Zealand
Folks, leave the body slamming to the professionals. A 50-year-old New Zealand man is facing a $600 fine after he reportedly jumped off his boat onto a wild orca whale in the ocean. The fine is due to the whale being a protected marine mammal. Officials called the act “stupid” and said the man put his own life at risk, and endangered a small calf that was swimming next to the adult male orca. Thing is – there’s a reason they call them KILLER WHALES. Orcas will mess you up. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been possessed by the ghost of ‘Macho Man’ Randy Savage, an elbow drop off the deck of a boat will not get you “cool points,” it’ll get you killed. Plain and simple.
Daily Did You Know – Local art program is connecting veterans with preschoolers
Here’s a cool thing happening in Milton this year! The FirstOntario Arts Centre Milton is launching a free art program, the Milton Veteran Creative Exchange – Empowering Generations Through Art. Each week, a preschooler is paired with a veteran or a 55+ adult to partake in art activities and share a snack break together. Registration is open online. The first session starts on Tuesday!
‘Coming back’: Katy Perry teases new music with cryptic social media move
Millennial pop music fans are frothing at the mouth this morning after Katy Perry teased new music on social media. After announcing her official departure from American Idol, Perry has been setting up a return to the pop scene. In the days following the final episode of Idol, fans have noticed that Perry has changed her profile pictures. It’s now a logo – with a red/orange background and a silver, stylized ‘KP’ on it. No timeline has been announced for this new album, it could come out tomorrow morning, it could come out in three months – BUT, new Katy Perry is coming… And that has people excited.
World’s most expensive feather sells at New Zealand auction
If you’ve listened to my show long enough, then you know, I love finding weird things that have been sold at auctions. Whether it’s interesting collectibles or just wacky pieces of history, it’s always fascinating to see what rich people will spend their money on. An auction house in New Zealand is making headline news after they had a feather go for thousands of dollars. Why is a feather worth that much? Well, this expensive feather comes from the extinct huia bird! It was expected to go for $3,000 NZD, but it finished at roughly $46,521! That’d be nearly $39,000 Canadian. If you wanted more than just a feather, an actual taxi-dermied huia sold for $457,704 at a U.K. auction last year. Might as well splurge for the whole bird at that point!
GOOD NEWS – Scientists grow diamonds from scratch in 15 minutes thanks to groundbreaking new process
More and more as time passes, we move away from a future where blood diamonds continue to be mined. Scientists continue to work on man-made diamonds, and have now formed a new process where they can grow a diamond from scratch in just 15 minutes. Currently, these “fast-food” diamonds are too small to be used as jewels, but in a few years, if the process continues to develop, we could see the diamond market CONTINUE to be flipped upside down… And that’s some good news!
Hopes beer made from killer bees will create buzz
Honey beer has been a growing trend over the years. We even have a local brewery in Milton that makes beer using the honey provided by the Milton Public Library and their beehives at their Beaty branch. So, it’s not uncommon to find honey beer in stores. What would be uncommon is to find beer made from honey provided by KILLER BEES. A university in the UK is working on this. They were able to use brewer’s yeast found in killer honeybees in Africa and develop craft beer. They’re now looking to find a brewer to partner with to mass produce this Killer Bee Beer – KILLER BEER, if you will.
Canadian cities with the best work-life balance
If you’re looking for great work-life balance, you might need to move to Quebec! A new report on the subject has been released by Point2Homes.com, and it ranked the top municipalities in Canada in terms of their professional and personal life balance. Quebec had three of the top five cities. Halton did fairly well, with Burlington ranking fourth, Oakville came in 18th, Halton Hills was 19th, and Milton was 23rd. What do you think? Do we have a great work-life balance in our community, or do you think the list is off? Let me know!
1 in 4 think this common task is more stressful than landing a plane!
I want you to imagine the most stressful thing you could be tasked with doing RIGHT NOW. For a lot of people, believe it or not, that would be moving! A new survey on stress tackled a bunch of “would you rathers” and it found that roughly 1/4 of people find moving to be more stressful than losing a job, running for president, and landing a plane! When was the last time you moved? Do you think you could handle the process again? Do you have any handy tips for someone looking to move in the near future? Send them my way!
