New schools are coming to Milton and the surrounding area.
Ontario Minister of Education, Stephen Lecce, has announced capital funding to build two new schools and a significant expansion for another school in the Milton and Halton Hills areas. This announcement is expected to create 1,383 new student spaces and 225 new licensed child care spaces.
The three projects selected for funding in the current capital priorities round are:
- An expansion to the Milton District High School for the Halton District School Board. A $26.4 million investment will create 354 student spaces and 88 licensed child care spaces
- A new École secondaire catholique Milton for the Conseil scolaire catholique MonAvenir. An investment of $27.4 million will support 502 student spaces and 49 licensed child care spaces
- A new Georgetown West Catholic Elementary School for the Halton Catholic District School Board. A $26.1 million investment for 527 student spaces and 88 licensed child care spaces
The province has also invested an additional $13.4 million in the new Milton #11 Catholic Elementary School announced in the 2022-23 round of Capital Priorities. Halton Catholic District School Board was granted a total $36.8 million to tender this project.
Since 2018, including these new schools, the Ontario government has invested a total of $378.7 million in Halton school boards for 12 new schools and 3 additions; creating a total of 10,380 student spaces and 978 child care spaces.
“Our government is focused on building new state-of-the-art schools and child care for families in rapidly growing areas across the province,” says Minister Lecce. “That is why I am proud to deliver a new Georgetown West Elementary school that will benefit young students in Wellington-Halton Hills, as well as a new French-language Catholic secondary school, École secondaire catholique Milton, and the expansion of Milton District High School. We are building modern schools that get students back-to-basics with hands-on learning to be better prepared for the jobs of the future. This government is getting it done and faster for parents and students in the Milton region.”
In December 2023, the Ministry of Education announced Ontario’s plan to help build schools faster through a transparent, accountable and more efficient process. In the recent Capital Priorities round, school boards were encouraged to standardize the design of new school construction, identify opportunities to work together on joint-use school projects, and bring forward shovel ready proposals.
The new plan will provide school boards with more flexibility and support to get shovels in the ground quicker and have more options to use existing buildings in their communities. These changes are part of the government’s strategy to ensure that the public education system focuses on what matters most: important life-long skills such as reading, writing and math; improving accountability and transparency for parents and families; and maximizing capital assets.
“As one of Ontario’s youngest communities, with over 30 percent of Milton’s population being under the age of 19, investing in education remains a top priority for us,” says Milton Mayor Gord Krantz. “We extend our gratitude to the Ontario Government for its announcement today regarding the province’s investment in new schools and the expansion of existing ones. These initiatives are crucial to meeting the needs of our growing student population and ensuring quality education for all.”
