If you suddenly had billions of dollars, where would you donate first?
96-year-old Ruth Gottesman of New York City says that when her husband died, he left behind something she wasn’t expecting. The man had $1 billion in Berkshire Hathaway stock… She didn’t even know he had that kind of investment!
At first, she had no idea what to do with it. She was nearing 100-years-old, already lived a full life and had everything she ever needed. With her kids telling her to decide quickly, she came to a realization. She was going to donate every single cent to the Albert Einstein School for Medicine in NYC.
Now, you might think she was giving money to the school for the school’s sake, but no! She was giving the school $1 billion to pay for every single student’s tuition, and not one medical student at this university will ever have to pay for tuition ever again.
How amazing is that?!
So, let’s say you won the lottery today and you ended up with more money than you’d ever possibly need, what’s the first donation you’re making?
Shoutout any local organizations if you’d like!

A Burlington street is closing next month thanks to LOVE! The Jefferson salamanders are about to enter their mating season, and they need to venture across King Road for their breeding migration. In order to help, the City of Burlington and Conservation Halton will close a section of the street for roughly one month. Go Jeffies Go!
Daily WTF – Weightlifter ate 39 coins, 37 magnets because he thought ‘zinc helps in bodybuilding’
Have you ever believed in something so sincerely that it almost killed you? Doctors in New Delhi, India had to remove all kinds of coins and magnets from a weightlifters stomach after the man ate them. Why? He thought zinc would help him in his bodybuilding journey. Instead, they were just clumping together inside his intestines, bringing him to the emergency room after three weeks of non-stop pain and vomiting. The man successfully went through surgery and spent seven days in the hospital before being discharged. Don’t eat coins and magnets!

Toronto Zoo’s baby white rhino gets a name
During the holidays, the Toronto Zoo welcomed a new baby white rhino. It was a pretty big deal as white rhinos are near threatened and having one birthed in captivity can help with conservation efforts. They didn’t have a name though, they were just calling the baby ‘TZTankPuppy’ online. Now, they have their name: Kifaru. According to the zoo, the name is Swahili for both ‘Tank’ and ‘Rhino’, which fits the baby perfectly. The Toronto Zoo is offering very limited ‘Baby Rhino Wild Encounter’ tickets for those who’d love to meet Kifaru. Sounds fascinating!
Bomb squad called after someone donated a grenade to a Canadian thrift store
This is a lesson: not everything can be donated to a thrift store. Staff at a BC thrift store had to call the police after they found a grenade in their donation bins. Abbotsford PD called in the bomb squad, and they found the grenade to be a decommissioned WWII Mills Grenade. Turns out, the donator accidentally put that in their donation pile, and the person says they use it as a paperweight. That’s one way to use a grenade, that’s for sure.
Adele takes a break to take care of her vocal cords
One of the biggest shows going in Las Vegas is Adele. She continues to hold her residency in the Colosseum at Caesars Palace. It seems the singer has been going a little strong as of late, as she’ll being take a break. She says her vocal chords are suffering, and she needs to step away from the microphone. It’s not the first time that she’s had these issues, either. Back in 2011, she had to undergo surgery to fix a similar issue. The plan is to give the voice a rest, with Adele joking that it’ll be hard to not speak for three days. I don’t know if I could do that, physically or financially! Hopefully she enjoys the rest and relaxation, and hits the stage at full force in a little bit.
People are fascinated by the Iowa State Fair ‘Mom Calling’ contest
We’ve all been there: you’re living at home and you need something, so who do you call out for? For parents, I’m sure it’s annoying, but for kids, it’s just a way of life. People are obsessing online over the Iowa State Fair ‘Mom Calling’ contest. Here are some of the participants in the most recent event. They are pale in comparison to the GOAT of calling for his mom: Will Ferrell.
Living near bars, fast food restaurants can be costly for your heart
What might seem like a luxury for some, could actually be harmful to others. A study diving into heart health found that living near bars and fast food restaurants is not great for the ol’ ticker. It turns out ready-made alcohol and greasy meats are not as healthy as you might think… Shocking, right? As always, enjoy in moderation and get some exercise. You could even walk to the bar! I’m sure that offsets every single bad decision you’ll make that night.
