How are you spending your Valentine’s Day?
Many have spent the last few days scrambling to get gifts for their partner. An estimated $26 billion is expected to be spent on Valentine’s Day in the US. This comes as ‘Experience Gifts’ grow in popularity. People are going on trips more often to celebrate the most romantic day of the year. They’re fairly easy to plan, but they happen to cost a lot.
For those looking to have a night out with their partner, many have opted to push V-Day activities to the weekend.
For those looking to buy chocolate and flowers:
- Red roses were the most popular
- Reese’s Peanut Butter Hearts were the top chocolate
- Bonus… Candy hearts were the #1 candy
And if you’re looking to stay in tonight:
- When Harry Met Sally was voted by Vanity Fair as the top rom-com
So, what are your plans?
Let me know!

Daily WTF – 70-year-old love letter from army veteran found in Grand Rapids man’s toolbox
It’s like The Notebook! A man happened to buy an old toolbox at a farm auction in 2017. Years later, he found a love letter inside. Thing is, it wasn’t addressed to him. It was from a soldier who sent the letter to the love of his life… 70 years ago! It appears the couple had an argument and the woman had not messaged the soldier in five months. This hurt the man, and he was confessing his love to her. A for the man who found the love letter, he tried to do some online snooping to see what happened to the couple, but he had no luck. He’s now asked that if anyone knows them they should reach out! He wants to see how the movie ended.
Daily Did You Know – Halton Catholic students sending letters to veterans for Valentine’s Day
Everyone needs a pick me up! The Halton Catholic District School Board is the largest distributor of letters for the Hearts for Heroes program. Every year, students write letters to veterans ahead of Valentine’s Day. Those letters get sent off around the world to vets, either active or retired. Pretty neat!
Super Bowl 58 most-watched U.S. program ever
A lot of people sat down to watch the Super Bowl on Sunday. With the Kansas City Chiefs taking on the San Francisco 49ers, and Taylor Swift in attendance, it seemed like almost everyone had at least some interest in the big game. According to Nielsen and Adobe Analytics, Super Bowl 58 averaged a record 123.4 million viewers across television and streaming platforms. They also had roughly 202.4 million unique viewers throughout the night, setting another record. In Canada, viewership peaked at 12.6 million viewers during Usher’s halftime show. Not too bad!
Ontario drivers won’t need to renew their licence plates anymore
Recently, the province decided to remove the fee for renewing your license plate. It was a nice surprise for people who despised going to Service Ontario and paying hundreds of dollars every one or two years. They also made the renewal process easy by moving it online! Now: you won’t need to do it all. Premier Doug Ford says they will be automating the renewal process. This comes after the Ministry of Transportation reported more than a million drivers with expired plates in Ontario. The automatic renewal process will only be available for drivers with a clean record. Anyone with outstanding tickets or toll bills will still have to do it manually. But, if you’re a good driver with a good head on your shoulder, you’ll now have one less thing to worry about. It’s like a reward.
‘The Golden Bachelorette’ announced for fall 2024
It’s not often that something played out finds new life in a simple idea. The creators of the reality dating show ‘The Bachelor’ struck gold when they came up with ‘The Golden Bachelor’. It took the premise of the classic dating show and made the contestants 60-years or older. Widower Gerry Turner became something of an icon for fans of the show, and people rooted on his quest to find the second love of his life. The show will return this fall as ‘The Golden Bachelorette’. No word on who the woman in question will be, but it’s expected to be one of the contestants from the last show (that’s the standard for The Bachelor at least). Can’t wait to see a bunch of grandfathers hit on someone’s nana.
Sony Music Acquires Major Stake in Michael Jackson Catalogue
Older musicians have started to cash out these last few years. Sting, Queen, Bruce Springsteen, and others have sold their music catalogues to music studios for hundreds of millions of dollars. These deals give the studios full rights to the music, and full profit of the songs in the future. The latest to join the trend is the Michael Jackson Estate. They’ve sold 50% of the catalogue to Sony Music for $600 million, making it the largest deal for a single musician’s music catalogue. No word on how the money will be distributed among the remaining Jackson family, but I’m sure they’ll be very happy with the incoming payday.
Are cheesy or serious movie lines more memorable? New survey has blockbuster results
With today being Valentine’s Day, many will likely be watching a popular romantic comedy with their partner. There are so many classics, with famous lines like, “You had me at hello…” or, “We’ll always have Paris.” There’s nothing quite like a good cheesy line to hit you right in the feels. In fact, a study has shown, people PREFER the cheese over serious movie lines. 63% of people surveyed said they’re more likely to remember a corny line from a rom-com than a serious line from a dramatic movie. In terms of total popularity, rom-coms more than doubled dramatic films in the final score, with 45% compared to 22%. What about you? Do you prefer the cheese?
Kiwi can uplift mental health in 4 days, claims research paper
Need a little pick me up? Eat a kiwi! Researchers out of New Zealand say their fruit is a great source of Vitamin C. They add that eating kiwis can improve your overall mood in just four days! It should be noted that New Zealanders have a vested interest in the success of kiwis as a fruit. It’d be like Canadians telling the world that research has shown that maple syrup improves your mood in four days. You’d believe it, because maple syrup rules, but also, of course a Canadian would do research on that. Like, there’s a reason why we call them Kiwis now instead of Chinese gooseberries, and it’s because of New Zealand. Anyway, feeling blue? Munch on a kiwi.
