Bus drivers are needed in Milton and across Halton.
There have been heavy delays and even cancellations due to a lack of school bus drivers around the region. The Halton District School Board (HDSB), the Halton Catholic District School (HCDSB) and the Halton Student Transportation Services (HSTS) invite interested individuals to submit their applications.
There is a necessity for additional school bus drivers in select areas of the Halton Region. Ongoing road construction has been affecting school bus operations since September, and these disruptions are anticipated to persist through November. Consequently, these circumstances have resulted in delays and occasional cancellations, with the areas most affected being Halton Hills and Milton.
HSTS has been collaborating with the bus companies to minimize the disruptions on students and their families. Parents/guardians are encouraged to sign up for delays and cancellation notifications here. A daily list of bus delays can be found on the HSTS website.
Supply drivers will continue to assist in covering bus routes and permanent drivers have been working extra time to ensure students are safely transported to and from school.
According to David Colley, General Manager of Halton Student Transportation Services, local bus companies have been contracted to operate 458 bus routes for the 2023-24 school year. Bus companies are reporting a complement of 466 permanent and substitute professional drivers. To guarantee sufficient coverage in the event of driver absences stemming from sickness, vacations, or family emergencies, an extra 20 to 30 bus drivers are needed.
“We are aware of the impact this may have on some families and we appreciate their patience and understanding during this time,” adds Colley.
Bus companies continue to actively recruit bus drivers. HSTS is assisting in this effort by advertising jobs on their website.
