Nearly 300 homes in Campbellville will soon get access to affordable high-speed internet.
The announcement was made on Thursday, March 16th by Milton Member of Parliament (MP) Adam van Koeverden and Milton Member of Provincial Parliament (MPP) Parm Gill. Nearly $2.4 million in combined federal-provincial funding will be used for Cogeco Connexion to bring high-speed internet access to up to 299 homes in the Milton hamlet.
“Access to internet has never been more important,” says MP van Koeverden, who also serves as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Health and to the Minister of Sport and Member of Parliament for Milton. “That is why our government is collaborating with Cogeco on this project and contributing to the nearly $2.4 million in combined funding to bring reliable high-speed internet access to up to 299 homes in Campbellville. Affordable high-speed internet access is an essential service in this day and age, and this investment reinforces our government’s commitment to connect 98 per cent of Canadians by 2026 and 100 per cent by 2030.”
The project is part of an existing partnership between Ontario and Canada. On July 29th, 2021, the governments announced a Canada–Ontario broadband partnership to support large-scale, fibre-based projects that will provide high-speed internet access to more than 280,000 households across the province. This agreement was made possible by a joint federal-provincial investment totaling more than $1.2 billion.
“Through nearly $2.4 million in combined federal and provincial funding, we are expanding access to high-speed internet for up to 299 homes and businesses in Campbellville,” says MPP Gill. “This will help build a stronger Ontario for families, workers and businesses and is part of our government’s comprehensive plan to ensure that no community will be left behind in today’s digital world.”
93.5% of Canadian homes have access to high-speed internet or will be covered by a project currently under way, compared to just 79% in 2014. The goal is for 98% of Canadians to have access to high-speed internet by 2026, and 100% by 2030.
