A mid-season acquisition was the hero for the Milton Menace are on Wednesday night.
It was game one of the first-round series between the Menace and the Pickering Panthers. The seven-game series is a rematch of last year’s Ontario Junior Hockey League (OJHL) North/West Conference Finals, where the Panthers swept the Menace 3-0 in the five-game series.
The Panthers jumped out to a 1-0 lead after Nick Athanasakos scored 5:45 into the first period. Pickering led by one after 20 minutes of action.
Connor Driscoll then tied things up in the second period with his 11:39 goal. It was assisted by Owen Kindree. Just over two minutes later, Pickering’s Ben Pickell (just try saying Pickering Panthers Pickell, you can thank me later) then took back that lead for the Panthers. The game was 2-1 Pickering after two periods.
Driscoll then tied the game AGAIN at the 9:31 mark in the third period, thanks to Jared Coccimiglio and Justin O’Donnell. Then, with less than a minute to go, Coccimiglio was the hero. His late game powerplay goal (assisted by Ivan Fabjan and Driscoll) was the winner, as the Milton Menace won 3-2 and are now up 1-0 in the seven-game series.
In net for the Menace was Forbes Anderson. He stopped 30 of 32 shots, giving him a .937% save percentage.
Game two of the series will be on Friday, March 10th. Puck-drop is scheduled for 8:00 p.m. at the Milton Memorial Arena. Milton Menace home tickets for this OJHL season can be found here.
