A 55-year-old Etobicoke man has been charged with fraud over $5,000 following a Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) investigation into alleged immigration fraud.
Police identified the accused as Kishorbhai Patel, also known as Kishor Patel, who allegedly presented himself as a lawyer and legal expert operating under the names ProLaw Canada Corporation LLP and Canadian International Business Corporation.
Investigators have confirmed that Patel is not licensed to practice law.
Between October 2025 and January 2026, victims sought assistance with work permit and permanent residency applications and sent multiple payments to the accused, according to police.
Patel was arrested in Oakville on October 8th, 2026, and charged with one count of fraud over $5,000.
The HRPS is asking anyone with information about the investigation, or anyone who believes they may have been a victim, to contact the Financial Crimes Unit at 905-825-4777, ext. 8742.
Police are reminding anyone seeking immigration assistance to verify a representative’s credentials and confirm they are authorized to provide the services being offered.
In Ontario, people can use the Law Society of Ontario’s online directory to check a lawyer’s licensing and practicing status. Immigration consultants can be verified through the College of Immigration and Citizenship Consultants.
Police also recommend obtaining a written agreement outlining services and fees, requesting receipts for payments, and being cautious of anyone who guarantees an immigration outcome or pressures clients to pay immediately.
