The Sopinka United Way Legal Luncheon will celebrate its 25th anniversary next month.
This event is bringing members of the legal community together in Hamilton to honour the legacy of Justice John Sopinka and raise funds for local community services.
The event will take place at the Sheraton Hamilton Hotel on Thursday, November 12th, beginning at 11:15 a.m. The 2026 keynote speaker will be The Right Honourable Richard Wagner, P.C., Chief Justice of Canada.
What began as an event for the legal community has grown into a longstanding tradition of philanthropy and community leadership. Lawyers, judges, legal professionals, law firms, students and community leaders attend each year to participate in legal discussions and support United Way.
Last year, more than 250 legal professionals attended the luncheon and raised more than $500,000 for United Way.
The luncheon is a United Way Golden Horseshoe fundraising event, with proceeds supporting local programs and services. The event follows the principle that funds raised locally stay local, helping strengthen services that address food insecurity, housing instability, mental health and well-being, and other challenges facing individuals and families.
United Way-supported agencies are experiencing significant demand for services, with many programs stretched to capacity.
Beyond fundraising, the luncheon provides an opportunity for members of the legal profession to use their leadership, professional networks and collective generosity to support the communities where they live and work. The event also encourages established legal professionals to involve younger lawyers, articling students and newcomers to the profession in a tradition of community involvement.
This year also offers a special matching opportunity for Leadership donors. New Leadership Gifts of $1,200 or more, as well as eligible increases to existing Leadership Gifts, will be matched, allowing eligible donors to increase the impact of their contributions.
