The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) has suspended its use of Crime Stoppers following a reported cybersecurity incident involving a third-party platform, after learning that some data related to Halton was included in the breach.
In a public statement, HRPS acknowledged the seriousness of the incident, citing concerns about the anonymity and safety of people who provide information to assist police investigations.
Although Halton Crime Stoppers and HRPS have worked together to support community safety, Crime Stoppers operates independently from the police service. The tip-management platform is not connected to HRPS internal systems.
Police say protecting the safety and security of Halton residents who have used Crime Stoppers remains a primary concern, along with maintaining public trust and the confidentiality of tipsters.
The service has suspended its use of Crime Stoppers while awaiting further information about the scope and impact of the breach. HRPS is also investigating and assessing any potential effects on police operations.
Residents who wish to report information about a crime or public safety concern are encouraged to contact HRPS directly through its existing reporting channels. Police note that reporting directly does not provide the same anonymity associated with the Crime Stoppers program, but ensures information is received directly by investigators.
Questions about the cybersecurity incident, the scope of any affected information and the measures taken in response should be directed to the Canadian Crime Stoppers Association.
