Two local students are among 10 Georgian College students receiving scholarships through the Schulich Builders Scholarships for Skilled Trades program.
Jake Coffey of Georgetown is studying Electromechanical Engineering Technician – Mechatronics at Georgian’s Barrie Campus and is receiving a $40,000 scholarship toward his two-year program.
Ryker Skimming of Glen Williams is studying Construction Techniques at the Barrie Campus and is receiving a $20,000 scholarship for his one-year program.
The two students are part of Georgian’s third cohort of Schulich Builders, which supports students pursuing careers in the skilled trades.
The scholarships, established by The Schulich Foundation, are valued at $40,000 for two-year diploma programs and $20,000 for one-year certificate programs. The funding can help cover expenses including tuition, tools and living costs.
Launched at Georgian in 2024, the program recognizes students who demonstrate strong character, commitment to their chosen field and financial need. Recipients also have opportunities for leadership development, mentorship and serving as ambassadors for skilled trades education.
“Congratulations to this year’s Schulich Builder Scholars,” says Judy Schulich, President of The Schulich Foundation. “The trades offer stable, in-demand careers. We’re excited to support these students as they build strong skills to set them up for success.”
Since joining the program in 2024, Georgian says it has welcomed 30 Schulich Builders across three cohorts, representing more than a dozen skilled trades programs across the college.
