Halton Region Public Health is warning residents after a bat found in Burlington this month tested positive for rabies.
This is the first confirmed case of rabies in a bat in Halton Region this year.
Rabies can cause severe damage to the brain and spinal cord and can be fatal if treatment is not received before symptoms appear. The virus is typically spread through the bite or scratch of an infected animal, including bats, raccoons, skunks and foxes.
Residents are reminded that bat bites can be difficult to detect. Anyone who has been bitten, scratched or exposed to bat saliva should immediately wash the affected area with soap and water and seek medical attention.
If you find a bat in your home, don’t attempt to move it. Contact local Animal Control Services. Residents should also make sure pets are up to date on their rabies vaccinations and keep them away from wildlife.
Halton Region Public Health says all animal bites and scratches should be reported by calling 311.
