The Milton Public Library has launched Nourish and Connect – A Senior-Led Culinary Wellness Initiative.
This is a new community program funded through the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program. It invites seniors, older adults, and families in Milton and the surrounding area to submit cherished family recipes, helping preserve culinary traditions and family stories for future generations.
Recipes will be reviewed by a panel of local chefs, with 50 recipes selected based on factors such as cultural diversity, accessibility, and ease of preparation. Five of those recipes will be featured in community cooking workshops, where participants will have the opportunity to cook alongside local chefs, share their stories, and potentially help lead future sessions.
Running from summer 2026 through March 2027, the program will also include hands-on cooking workshops, nutrition education sessions, food safety programming in partnership with Halton Region Public Health, and intergenerational events that bring seniors and youth together. The collected recipes will also be used to create a community cookbook.
“These programs have proven to be incredibly impactful in fostering connection, confidence, and a sense of belonging among older adults in Milton,” says Sarah Douglas-Murray, CEO of Milton Public Library. “Nourish and Connect is a beautiful example of how food can bring people together and strengthen the fabric of our community.”
Residents interested in participating can submit a favourite family recipe here.
