One batch of mosquitoes collected in Halton Region has tested positive for West Nile virus, marking the first confirmed detection of the virus in mosquitoes in the region this year.
Halton Region says the positive mosquito batch was identified from traps collected this week. Urban areas are considered more likely to have mosquitoes that carry West Nile virus, as the species that most commonly transmits the virus to humans breeds in standing water found in places such as bird baths, flower pots, old toys, and discarded tires.
Most people infected with West Nile virus do not develop symptoms. However, some may experience fever, headache, body aches, joint pain, vomiting, diarrhea, or a rash. While most recover fully, the Region says some individuals can develop serious illnesses affecting the central nervous system, including encephalitis (inflammation of the brain) or meningitis (inflammation of the membranes surrounding the brain and spinal cord). Adults over 50 and people with certain medical conditions, including cancer, diabetes, hypertension, and kidney disease, are at greater risk of severe illness.
Residents are encouraged to reduce their risk of mosquito bites by wearing light-coloured, long-sleeved clothing, particularly between dusk and dawn or in shaded, wooded areas, and by using insect repellents containing DEET or Icaridin. The Region also recommends eliminating standing water around homes by emptying water-filled containers and changing bird bath water at least once a week. Window and door screens should also be kept in good repair.
Halton Region continues to monitor mosquito populations through its West Nile virus surveillance program. Residents can report standing water on public property by calling 311.
