Conservation Halton has expanded electric vehicle charging infrastructure across its parks with the installation of 18 new charging stations at five conservation areas.
The new chargers are now available at Area 8, Hilton Falls, Kelso, Mountsberg in Milton, as well as Mount Nemo in Burlington. Combined with two existing charging stations at Conservation Halton’s administrative office, the organization now offers a total of 20 EV charging stations across its properties.
The project is intended to support sustainable transportation by improving access to EV charging in rural Halton while enhancing the visitor experience.
“Investing in EV infrastructure is a critical step toward reducing our environmental footprint and supporting the transition to a low-carbon future,” says Chandra Sharma, President & CEO at Conservation Halton. “We are proud to offer our visitors more sustainable transportation options, while investing back in nature and outdoor education through our Conservation Halton Foundation, thanks to support from Natural Resources Canada.”
Revenue generated through the charging stations will be directed to the Conservation Halton Foundation to support park maintenance, biodiversity protection and community education programs.
“The charging stations in our parks are more than convenience. We’re aligning our infrastructure with our values,” notes Craig Machan, Parks & Operations Director at Conservation Halton. “Providing EV charging spots make it easier for park guests to make sustainable choices while enjoying nature, and they represent an important investment in the future of our parks.”
The EV charging network was partially funded through Natural Resources Canada’s Zero Emission Vehicle Infrastructure Program, while the chargers and software at Conservation Halton’s administrative office were donated by Eaton.
According to Conservation Halton, each Conservation Area features Level 2 J-1772 7.2 kW FLO charging stations. The locations include:
- Area 8 – Two charging ports near the main building
- Hilton Falls – Four charging ports near the park entrance gate
- Kelso – Six charging ports at the Visitor Centre and Boat Rentals parking lot
- Mountsberg – Four charging ports at the Visitor Centre parking lot
- Mount Nemo – Two charging ports in the main parking lot
The administrative office also includes two Level 2 J-1772 7.2 kW Eaton charging stations.
Adam van Koeverden, Secretary of State (Sport), said the investment supports cleaner transportation options across the region.
“Canada is investing in the infrastructure needed for cleaner and greener transportation and a stronger low-carbon economy. By expanding EV charging access across Halton’s Conservation Areas and Parks, our government is working with our partners to provide practical solutions for greener transportation. This investment in electric vehicle charging infrastructure will reduce emissions and air pollution, encourage innovation and EV adoption, support our community, and build a cleaner future for generations to come. I’ve been driving an EV for years—it’ll be great to take the dog for a walk or go for a ski and charge the car while we exercise!”
