Students at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Secondary School in Milton have raised more than $75,000 for the Canadian Cancer Society through their first-ever Relay for Life event.
Held in May, the school-wide fundraiser brought together more than 240 students in support of those affected by cancer. The total more than doubled the event’s original fundraising goal of $30,000.
Relay for Life is a national initiative organized by the Canadian Cancer Society that raises money for cancer research while honouring survivors and remembering those impacted by the disease.
Students were required to raise at least $100 each to participate, using a variety of fundraising methods including collecting donations from family and friends, mowing lawns, walking dogs, and organizing other community-based activities.
During the event, teams of 10 students took turns walking laps around the school track while participating in themed activities, encouraging one another, and reflecting on the significance of the cause.
One of the day’s most emotional moments was the Survivor Lap, which recognized cancer survivors and celebrated their resilience. The opening ceremony also provided an opportunity for participants to honour friends, family members, and loved ones affected by cancer.
School officials say the event showcased student leadership, community support, and the impact that can be made when people work together toward a common goal.
