The province’s police watchdog has closed its investigation into serious injuries suffered by a 28-year-old man in Oakville, concluding there was no evidence of police involvement in the incident.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says the incident occurred late on March 17th, when the man climbed onto the roofs of townhouse units near Dundas Street East and Postridge Drive. Halton Police officers had responded to the area after receiving calls from concerned residents and were speaking with one of the callers when they heard a metallic noise coming from the south side of a building.
Investigators determined the man had fallen while attempting to climb down from the roof. Officers located him limping and took him into custody. He suffered fractures to his spine and both feet as a result of the fall.
SIU Director Joseph Martino terminated the investigation after preliminary inquiries found no interaction between police officers and the man before he fell. In a statement, the SIU said there was “patently nothing to investigate” regarding potential criminal liability on the part of any officer and concluded the man alone was responsible for his injuries.
The SIU is an independent civilian agency that investigates incidents involving police and other officials that may have resulted in death, serious injury, sexual assault, or the discharge of a firearm at a person.
