The Milton Menace are looking for local families willing to open their homes to out-of-town players for the upcoming hockey season.
Billet, or host, families provide room and board for players who travel from across Canada to compete with the Ontario Junior Hockey League club. The organization says the program offers players a supportive home environment while they pursue their hockey goals away from their families.
Host families are expected to provide a private bedroom, access to common household amenities, nutritious meals or food options, internet access, and a welcoming home atmosphere. Players are expected to respect household rules, maintain their living space, and keep billet families informed of their whereabouts.
Families may host up to two players, with the Menace noting that having more than one player in a home can provide companionship and help share transportation costs. All players complete detailed applications and must meet team standards for behaviour and academic performance.
Players typically arrive in Milton in mid-to-late August and remain through the end of the season, which generally concludes in March or early April. Billet families receive a monthly stipend to help offset expenses associated with hosting a player.
The team says one of the biggest benefits of the program is the lasting relationships formed between players, host families, and their families back home.
Those interested in becoming a billet family must contact the Milton Menace, review the billet family policies and guidelines, complete a vulnerable sector screening, and participate in a meet-and-greet with a player and team representative.
