Families are invited to celebrate Father’s Day outdoors as Conservation Halton hosts its annual Father’s Day Fishing Derby at Area 8 Conservation Area this month.
The event is geared toward children eight years old and under, who can compete to catch the biggest fish from the docks, shoreline, or while exploring the reservoir by canoe or kayak. Dads, father figures, and older children are also welcome to take part in the fun, although only children aged eight and under are eligible for derby prizes.
As part of Conservation Halton’s restoration efforts, the Area 8 reservoir has been stocked with native fish species over several years. All fish caught during the derby must be released back into the water. Participants may encounter bass, brook trout, perch, sunfish, and bluegill.
The day begins with check-in at 8:30 a.m., followed by optional boat rental sessions from 9:00 to 10:00 a.m., and 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. A family celebration featuring games, activities, live music, and a barbecue lunch will run from 11:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Food will be available for purchase on-site.
An awards ceremony is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. All young anglers will receive medals, while trophies will be awarded for the largest fish caught in three age categories: four and under, five to six years old, and seven to eight years old.
Fishing derby entry costs $10 for children eight and under, in addition to regular park admission. Optional fishing rod rentals are available for $5, while worms and corn kernels can be purchased for $5 each. Canoe and kayak rentals are also available for $33.
Organizers note that participants should bring their own fishing lures, use barbless hooks, and keep all dogs leashed throughout the event. Fishing at Area 8 is only permitted during approved Conservation Halton events and programs.
It’s happening at Area 8 on Sunday, June 2st. between 8:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
