Halton Healthcare says new robotic-assisted surgical technology at Milton District Hospital is helping patients recover faster while receiving advanced care closer to home.
The hospital recently highlighted the experience of Milton resident Spencer Deumer, who underwent prostate cancer surgery using the da Vinci Surgical System after being diagnosed in 2025. Deumer said he was up and moving the same day as the procedure and discharged the following morning, returning to normal activities within weeks.
The da Vinci Surgical System allows surgeons to perform minimally invasive procedures with greater precision through robotic-assisted technology. Halton Healthcare currently uses the system for prostate and colorectal surgeries, with plans to expand its use in the future.
Dr. Kevin Kwan said the technology allows patients who may previously have been referred to larger specialized centres to now receive treatment locally. Hospital officials say the system can reduce recovery times and shorten hospital stays for patients.
The surgical robot was fully funded through donations to the Milton District Hospital Foundation. Hospital leadership says the addition of the technology marks another step in expanding advanced patient care services within the community.
