Milton Courthouse (2020)
A Burlington couple has been found guilty in the 2022 death of a 12-year-old boy and the abuse of his younger brother.
Justice Clayton Conlan delivered the verdict this week following a lengthy trial held in Milton, convicting Brandy Cooney and Becky Hamber of first-degree murder and additional charges related to the surviving child.
The court heard the couple had been caring for the boys for several years and were in the process of trying to adopt them. The identities of the children remain protected under a publication ban.
In his decision, the judge cited extensive evidence, including witness testimony and electronic communications, concluding the actions of the accused demonstrated intent and a pattern of abuse.
“While this outcome ensures accountability for those responsible, it cannot undo the loss of a young life,” says Halton Regional Police Service Deputy Chief, Jeff Hill. “Our thoughts remain with the victim, his sibling, his family, and all those impacted by these tragic events. Today’s guilty verdicts mark the end of a long and difficult process. This investigation was both complex and deeply disturbing. Members of our Child Abuse and Sexual Assault Unit, and Halton Crown Attorney’s Office remained committed to uncovering the truth and seeking justice for a child who was placed in a position of trust and vulnerability. This case also underscores shared importance of protecting children and the critical role that community members, service providers, and authorities all play in recognizing and reporting signs of abuse.”
At the time of writing, a specific date for sentencing hasn’t been set.
