The Town of Milton is reminding property owners of their legal responsibility to control and destroy noxious weeds under provincial legislation.
Officials say the requirement falls under the Weed Control Act, which aims to reduce the impact invasive and harmful plants can have on agriculture and horticulture. The rules apply specifically to lands used for agricultural purposes or generating income – not private lawns, gardens, or personal-use spaces.
Noxious weeds are typically defined as plants that are difficult to manage, can negatively affect crop yield or quality, or pose risks to livestock and farm workers. The province maintains a list of designated species, but town inspectors can also assist in identifying problem plants and recommending proper removal methods.
The Town notes that in cases where property owners fail to comply, enforcement action may be taken, including issuing a provincial order to remove the weeds.
Residents can report concerns or request assistance through the Town, and officials are encouraging cooperation to help protect local agriculture.
