The federal government is investing new funding to support the mental health of athletes and coaches across Canada.
MP for Burlington North—Milton West, and the Secretary of State for Sport, the Honourable Adam van Koeverden, announced $6.22 million over two years through the Sport Support Program to strengthen mental health services and help prevent maltreatment in high-performance sport. The funding will focus on national team athletes and coaches, ensuring they have access to resources that support both performance and well-being.
“By investing in athletes and the people and programs that support them, we are helping to create a high-performance sport environment where athletes and coaches can thrive and succeed,” says MP van Koeverden.
The announcement was made at the Terry Fox Athletic Facility in Ottawa, where van Koeverden also met with athletes to discuss the mental health challenges they face and how those pressures align with broader national health priorities.
Of the total investment, $3.11 million will be provided annually to maintain access to mental health services, particularly for those preparing for international competition. The funding is part of a larger $16-million commitment announced in March aimed at supporting athlete and coach well-being.
