The Halton Regional Police Service (HRPS) is warning residents after a camouflaged trail camera was discovered in a Milton neighbourhood, a tactic believed to be linked to residential break-ins.
Officers were called to a home on Thursday, April 16th after a homeowner found the camera and battery pack hidden in shrubs and pointed toward nearby houses. Investigators note that criminals may use these devices to monitor occupancy patterns and identify when homes are vacant.
Residents are being urged to stay alert, especially as warmer weather approaches and break-and-enter incidents typically increase. Police advise homeowners to regularly check their properties during spring clean-up and to avoid touching any suspicious devices, instead contacting police to safely collect them.
Authorities are also reminding the public to watch for suspicious people or vehicles and report concerns immediately. In emergencies, call 911, while non-emergency incidents can be reported to police at 905-825-4777 or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
Police are also encouraging residents to take preventative steps such as securing doors and windows, installing lighting and security systems, maintaining visibility around properties, and ensuring homes appear occupied when away.
