Gord Krantz has officially announced that he will seek re-election.
The longtime mayor made the announcement during a televised appearance on YourTV Halton, saying he remains motivated and in good health as he prepares for another campaign.
First elected as mayor in 1980, Krantz is entering his 22nd municipal election, with his political career dating back to his first run for council in 1965. His run as Milton’s Mayor is the longest in Canadian history, surpassing Hazel McCallion’s famous tenure as Mississauga Mayor in December 2016.
At this time, his competition is one he knows very well. Regional Councillor for Milton’s Ward 4, Sameera Ali, declared her candidacy this past winter. Other candidates are expected to announce their candidacy over the coming months.
Krantz narrowly won the 2022 election over then-Regional Councillor and current-Milton MPP Zee Hamid by about 1,000 votes. By pure voting count, it was his closest race since first being elected 46 years ago, and it was his closest ever by voter share.
The municipal election is set for October 26th.
