Halton Learning Foundation Month is underway, with organizers calling on the community to support students facing financial barriers across Halton.
The initiative, led by the Halton Learning Foundation, runs throughout April and aims to ensure students in the Halton District School Board (HDSB) have access to essentials like food, school supplies, and extracurricular opportunities. The campaign officially launched with a flag-raising event at the board’s headquarters, bringing together staff, supporters, and community leaders.
“No student should have to choose between learning and basic needs,” says HLF CEO Marc Clare. “HLF Month is our community’s chance to come together and make sure every student has what they need to succeed.”
More than 2,000 students have already received emergency assistance this school year, with the foundation supporting nearly 30,000 students since its founding in 2004. Funding helps cover essentials such as clothing, meals, school programs, and scholarships.
Community members, schools, and local businesses are encouraged to get involved by hosting fundraisers, raising awareness, or making donations. A key event this month is “Students in the Spotlight,” taking place Wednesday, April 29th at Burlington Central High School, featuring student performances and an art showcase in support of their peers.
Other initiatives include “Tour de Halton,” where participants can walk, run, or cycle to raise funds. Clare is also leading by example, planning to cycle more than 100 kilometres across Halton on Thursday, April 23rd. Donations made during the campaign will be matched up to $10,000, helping extend support to even more local students.
