Two people are facing charges after a counterfeit money investigation linked to a Barrie business transaction.
The investigation began in December, after a local business owner reported receiving a large cash down payment as part of a private sale that was later determined to be counterfeit.
Barrie Police launched a fraud investigation, which led to the execution of a search warrant at a residence in Whitby on Friday, March 27th. During the search, officers seized counterfeit Canadian and U.S. currency with an estimated face value of approximately $1.5 million.
As a result, a 51-year-old man from Whitby has been charged with:
- Fraud Over $5,000
- Possession of Counterfeit Money (x2)
- Making or Having or Dealing in Instruments for Counterfeiting
- Making Counterfeit Currency
A 32-year-old woman from Whitby is also facing charges, including:
- Possession of Counterfeit Money (x2)
- Making or Having or Dealing in Instruments for Counterfeiting
- Making Counterfeit Currency
The investigation remains ongoing.
