The Milton Menace were unable to finish out the regular season on a win streak, and that means they have dropped down a peg in the OJHL West Conference standings.
On Friday, February 27th, the Menace welcomed in the Leamington Flyers to the Milton Memorial Arena. It was a must-win for the Menace as they looked to clinch 3rd place in the West.
It was the Flyers early as they dominated the possession game. The Menace would find themselves down 1-0 after 20 minutes of action.
In the second period, Leamington would add to their lead early before Milton would get one back late. Jason Zhou scored his 11th of the year, assisted by Dallys Hibbert and Gabe Runco on the powerplay.
The Flyers then added some insurance in the first minute of the final period, and they’d carry that lead to the end of the game. Milton would lose 3-1.
Austin McKillop was in net for the Menace. He stopped 40 of 43 shots, giving him a strong .930% save percentage in the losing effort.
With the stress of Friday night out of the way, the Menace went into Mississauga’s Port Credit Memorial Arena on Saturday, February 28th, looking to just get a win on the board ahead of the postseason.
No scoring in the first period, as the Menace found themselves on the penalty kill twice late. That helped the Chargers outshoot the Menace 15-3 in the opening frame.
The ice tilt then flipped in the second period as Milton outpaced Mississauga 20-9 in the shots category. That led to Alec Stewart burying his 15th of the season, assisted by Nathan Catalano and Wolf Giles. It was 1-0 Milton after 40 minutes of action.
In the final period, the gameplay exploded. Mississauga jumped out to a 2-1 lead before the Menace fired back with three goals of their own, courtesy of Jason Zhou, Joel Apthorp, and Nathan Catalano. Milton beat Mississauga 4-2 for a win in the final game of the regular season.
Hayden Duncan was between the pipes this time around. He stopped 30 of 32 shots, giving him the .937% save percentage and the win.
With the loss to Leamington, the Menace finish in the 4th place in the West Conference, with a record of 38-14-3-1 in all 56 games played. Their 80 points is an improvement of last year’s performance and just shy of the team’s franchise record set in 2023-2024.
They will now take on the 5th place Burlington Cougars in the first round of the OJHL Playoffs. We’ll keep you updated on the schedule when it is shared.
